Application of Porter's Five Forces Model and generic strategies for vascular surgery: should be stuck in the middle?
Abstract There are many stakeholders in the vascular marketplace from clinicians to hospitals, third party payers, medical device manufacturers and the government. Economic stress, threats of policy reform and changing health-care delivery are adding to the challenges faced by vascular surgeons. Use of Porter's Five Forces analysis to identify the sources of competition, the strength and likelihood of that competition existing, and barriers to competition that affect vascular surgery will help our specialty understand both the strength of our current competition and the strength of a position that our specialty wi...

Guidelines for hospital privileges in vascular surgery and endovascular interventions: Recommendations of the Society for Vascular Surgery
The Hospital Privileges Practice Guideline Writing Group of the Society for Vascular Surgery is making the following five recommendations concerning guidelines for hospital privileges for vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. Advanced endovascular procedures are currently entrenched in the everyday practice of specialized vascular interventionalists, including vascular surgeons, but open vascular surgery remains uniquely essential to the specialty. First, we endorse the Residency Review Committee for Surgery recommendations regarding open and endovascular cases during vascular residency and fellowship training.

Vascular Surgery: An Essential Hospital Resource in Modern Health Care
Vascular surgeons are consulted by other surgical specialties for intraoperative vascular exposure, reconstruction, or hemorrhage control. These requests occur both electively and emergently. We analyzed the value of vascular surgery operative services as a resource to other surgical specialties at our institution.

Pediatric Vascular Surgical Practice Patterns
Vascular surgeons infrequently care for pediatric patients. As such, variability in operative management and available hospital resources at free-standing children ’s hospitals (CH) may exist. The study aims were: 1) determine vascular surgeon comfort level with pediatric vascular surgery, and 2) determine variations in pediatric vascular surgery practice patterns.

Vascular Surgery in Ethiopia: Result of Twinning Partnership in Developing Vascular Care
In Sub-Saharan Africa, the field of vascular surgery is relatively new. Cardiovascular diseases and other noncommunicable diseases account for>70% of global mortality; moreover, 5 billion people have no access to basic and emergency surgical care. Since 2016, the Division of Vascular Surgery of the University of Wisconsin and Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia developed a partnership whereby a vascular surgery care and fellowship training program was initiated.

Risk Score for Unplanned 30-Day Readmissions after Major Vascular Surgery Procedures
This study aimed to determine predictors of unplanned readmission and develop a risk score for predicting readmissions after vascular surgery.

Accuracy of the NSQIP Universal Risk Calculator Using a Vascular Surgery Cohort in a Community Teaching Hospital
The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) universal risk calculator tool was designed using 1.4 million cases and>1500 unique Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes to estimate perioperative risk across multiple surgical subspecialties to guide informed consent. We aimed to test whether perioperative risk was accurately estimated for a vascular surgery cohort in a community teaching hospital setting.

Preoperative antiplatelet and statin treatment was not associated with reduced myocardial infarction after high-risk vascular operations in the Vascular Quality Initiative
Medical management with antiplatelet (AP) and statin therapy is recommended for nearly all patients undergoing vascular surgery to reduce cardiovascular events. We assessed the association between preoperative use of AP and statin medications and postoperative in-hospital myocardial infarction (MI) in patients undergoing high-risk open surgery.

Risk-Modifying Medication Prescription and Compliance in Vascular Surgery Patients
This study described the cardiovascular risk modification (RM) medication profile of vascular surgery patients at a Canadian vascular tertiary care center and assessed the impact of a hospital admission on compliance with RF medications after discharge.

Mind the Gaps: Comparing Vascular Quality Initiative and National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Populations and Outcomes in Open Infrainguinal Bypass
The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) and the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Procedure Targeted (NSQIP-PT) databases both aim to prospectively capture key variables related to vascular surgical procedures nationwide in order to track outcomes and improve quality. Both of these databases, however, are subject to bias based on voluntary hospital participation, and only VQI captures all consecutive procedures within a procedural area (eg, infrainguinal bypass, suprainguinal bypass), whereas NSQIP uses a sample of the total cases by institution.

Variation in Hospital Costs and Reimbursement for Endovascular Aneurysm Repair —A Vascular Quality Initiative Pilot Project
Comparing costs between centers is difficult because of the heterogeneity of vascular procedures contained in broad diagnosis-related group (DRG) billing categories. The purpose of this pilot project was to develop a mechanism to merge Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) clinical data with hospital billing data to allow more accurate cost and reimbursement comparison for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) procedures across centers.
